Job Description

Intern will be focused on updating Canal Corporation Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data layers including, but not limited to, occupancy permit areas, trail infrastructure and canal property boundaries. Incumbent may also be tasked with geo-referencing historic maps in order to establish early canal era alignments and property ownership. Intern may also be tasked with field work using global positioning system equipment (GPS) to capture special data to be incorporated into GIS.

Skills, knowledge, and abilities the intern will walk away with at the end of the internship:

Skills: Improved understanding and experience in enterprise GIS data gathering, development and maintenance as it relates to a NYS-wide asset.

Knowledge: Better understanding of how the NYS Canal Systems current and historic spatial elements played a role in shaping Upstate NY and the United States.

Abilities: GIS technical expertise in Canal data development including use of GPS, Arc Map including internal and external data sources.

Required Skills

Technical Competencies:

  • MS Work, Access, Excel, PowerPoint.

  • Arc Map including Arc Catalogue, 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst.

  • Preference towards knowledge of GPS unit operation.

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Ability to follow instructions.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Work independently.

Required Experience

Enrolled in undergraduate or graduate Geography/Planning degree + Certification in GIS
