The Fiber Network Specialist will be a member of the FirstEnergy IT Fiber Construction Team responsible for new fiber installations and the management of the FirstEnergy fiber network that support FirstEnergy’s ten local electric distribution companies that span five states. The FirstEnergy IT Fiber Team provides mission critical fiber monitoring and maintenance support that is required for the proper operation of the FirstEnergy electrical network.
The Fiber Network Specialist position will work with management, engineering and field personnel within IT and other FirstEnergy Departments. On a daily basis, they will also work closely with a wide range of fiber contractors and sub-contractors.
The Fiber Network Specialist will work with Senior Team members and will be assigned tasks by and will be directed by the Fiber Team’s Senior staff members.
The long-term goal will be for the new Fiber Network Specialist to be assigned individual fiber projects that they will lead and coordinate.
Principal Tasks and Accountabilities
Support and manage the FirstEnergy Fiber Optic Network and projects.
Follow established IT Operations and network processes.
Championing safe work practices for FirstEnergy employees and contractors in accordance with Corporate, OSHA and other industry practices.
Work closely with other FirstEnergy departments, contractors and subcontractors to develop project requirements, costs and schedule.
Develop business cases for new projects
Field site visits in support of projects, maintenance, or relocations (as necessary).
Design fiber solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective.
Ensure FirstEnergy and contractor documentation is complete and up to date.
Coordinate of fiber optic events within the FirstEnergy Change Management process.
Minimum of two (2) years of direct outside fiber experience .
Will have worked withinoneof the following:
Electric distribution or transmission industry.
Fiber engineering or design contractor.
Fiber installation or maintenance company.
Cable service provider.
General management of fiber networks
Design, installation, maintenance or support of ADSS and OPGW outside fiber networks
Experience with drawing and document storage tools (AutoCAD, Visio, Filenet, Excel, etc.)
Knowledge of mapping programs used for documentation of fiber optic cable routes.
Proven skills in utilizing construction drawings and documents.
Optical network troubleshooting skills.
Demonstrated small job project coordination or management.
In addition to the above requirements, it’s preferred that candidates have ADSS and OPGW fiber plant experience in three or more of the following areas:
ADSS and OPGW cable and suspension hardware installation and maintenance practices.
Experience in the proper practices for fusion splicing and terminations of MMF and SMF cables in outdoor splice cases and on Fiber Distribution Panels.
Optical networks trouble resolution skills.
Familiarity with optical network transport technologies.
Experience with managing right of way and permit issues.
General knowledge of OSHA, NESC, and other standards required for installation of fiber in the power space.
Understanding of underground locating requirements and services.
Education and Training
- Bachelor or Associate Degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, or Electronics Technology or appropriate on-the-job experience.
