Position Summary

Responsible for supporting the company’s Communications and Branding group by producing clear, concise, and accurate written materials for a wide range of internal clients with an emphasis on meeting the communications needs of the senior leadership team. Requires strong ability to provide content on a wide range of energy-industry and company-specific topics.

Works closely with the Manager, Communications Services and other members of the Communications and Branding team to produce written materials that consistently meet high standards for corporate communications.

The position will report to the Manager, Communications and is located at the Corporate Office in Akron, Ohio.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develops communications materials for senior executives and others in support of corporate messaging strategy

  • Writes clear, concise, and engaging content for speeches, testimony, Q&A, advertorials, brochures, presentations, and other materials covering a broad range of topics for diverse audiences

  • Takes leading role in planning and contributing written material to the company’s annual report to shareholders, annual shareholders’ meeting, strategic plan, corporate responsibility report and other publications

  • Interacts with Legal Dept. for the review and approval of materials to ensure consistency with corporate messaging and compliance with laws and regulations

  • Works collaboratively with co-workers in Communications and Branding department, including the in-house design team, as well as with external creative agencies, writers, and photographers

  • Updates and maintains company fact sheets, executive bios, and Speakers Bureau presentations

  • Consistently meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related discipline required (advanced degree a plus)

  • Minimum 7 years relevant work experience required. Relevant work experience will include high-level communication skills including superior writing ability. Previous agency or corporate communications experience preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Office 365, SharePoint

  • Possesses excellent writing and verbal skills and crafts compelling, impactful content based on conducting research and interviewing subject matter experts.

  • Must have strong editing and analytical skills, knowledge of design, layout, and photography principles.

  • Requires ability to work collaboratively with various groups across the organization on a self-directed basis

  • Working knowledge of AP (Associated Press) style

  • Experience working with tight deadlines, ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work

  • Expected to respond to weekend and afterhours calls on an as needed basis

  • Ability to independently work extra hours during prolonged electric system outages or other emergency situations

  • Willingness to travel to other FirstEnergy locations, as needed or during crisis situations
