About the Opportunity

A Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Engineer in the Analytical Methods Unit of the Fleet Design Engineering Department will develop, maintain, and upgrade the PRA models for Davis-Besse, Beaver Valley, and Perry Nuclear Power Stations. The Analytical Methods Unit is committed to enhancing fleet PRA models and processes such that they meet or exceed industry standards for risk informed applications.


  • Acquiring a familiarity with nuclear plant design, and operation, in addition to PRA methods.

  • Developing relationships to Interact and communicate with engineering, maintenance, operations, and regulatory affairs personnel to fully understand plant issues and effectively assess those issues in the plant PRA.

  • Developing and implementing PRA models and develop expert knowledge in all methods associated with internal events Level 1 and/or Level 2 PRA modeling.

  • Developing expert knowledge in external events such as fire PRA, seismic PRA and other external hazards.

  • Develop expert knowledge and implementing EPRI CAFTA suite of software and/or Riskman suite of software.

  • Developing knowledge and implementing PRA applications, such as SDP, NOED, Maintenance Rule, MSPI, SFCP, RICT, 10CFR50.69.

  • Developing skills using VBA or other software tools, to enable the ability to troubleshoot software issues, implement new software packages, and perform upgrades of PRA software.

  • Developing insights given uncertainty in the analysis, communicating those insights to plant management, Operations, the NRC, and others as needed.

  • The candidate will be expected once qualified to perform all the following or related studies:

  • core and plant wide analysis (thermal or hydraulic) to establish core and plant parameters during normal and beyond design basis plant operation, evaluation of transients and accident sequences;

  • reactor plant design and modification impact analysis;

  • human reliability analysis, data analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, statistical analysis, room heat up analysis;

  • reactor containment analysis;

  • fire hazard analysis;

  • internal and external flooding analysis;

  • seismic and civil structural affects analysis;

  • high winds analysis, etc.

  • Evaluating, monitoring, and conducting trend analyses on the performance of all nuclear systems and/or components important to nuclear safety. Informing systems surveillance frequencies, availability and reliability performance criteria, and mitigating systems criteria.

  • Reviewing for integration into the PRA and risk informs future design changes, operations procedure changes, and other related process changes.

  • Providing training to plant personnel on PRA and risk informed applications and the use of PRA tools.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong analytical ability.

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with all employees at FirstEnergy.

  • Able to deliver quality and accurate work within established deadlines.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make formal technical presentations to various management levels.

  • Ability to work extended hours, shift schedules and perform on-call duties when necessary.
