About the Opportunity
This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.
The FirstEnergy Legal department provides exceptional counsel that assures legal compliance and enables FirstEnergy to optimize business outcomes in all legal, regulatory, and commercial contexts. The Legal department is involved in every major activity and initiative involving all entities of FirstEnergy Corp.
The Corporate Counsel will work directly with business units, particularly Human Resources, and other department lawyers, and will serve as an important resource on a broad range of employment law and labor law issues. The counsel will provide practical legal advice in a fast-paced environment.
The position reports to the Associate General Counsel. Position is located within the FE Territory with a strong preference in the Northeast Ohio area.
Responsibilities:
Serving as the subject matter expert in all areas of federal and state employment and labor laws
Providing timely and practical legal advice on employment and labor law issues, including hiring, performance management, disciplinary action, terminations, discrimination, harassment, unfair labor practices, labor arbitration, NLRB work, collective bargaining, internal investigations, reasonable accommodation, wage and hour compliance, and other general employee and labor union risk management
Providing advice on legal compliance issues affecting employees
Managing outside counsel on certain employment and labor law issues, including litigation and pre-litigation matters
Identifying risk areas and advising internal stakeholders on ways to reduce risk
Working on complex legal matters as part of a team with other attorneys, business units, and outside counsel.
Engaging in frequent client contact and handling multiple ongoing matters simultaneously
Providing legal support and strategic and business advice to FirstEnergy business units
Responding to clients’ needs consistent with corporate values, strategies, risks and objectives
Qualifications:
7+ years of experience in employment and/or labor law
Relevant work experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department
J.D. degree from an accredited university required with membership in at least one U.S. state bar (Ohio license preferred)

Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
Sound and practical business judgment, work ethic, and problem-solving skills project management experience
Demonstrated willingness and ability to understand new topical areas
Ability to multitask and manage time to adhere to deadlines
