Department Summary

The instructional designer position is responsible for partnering with business and human resources leaders on building instructional materials across numerous content areas (technical skills including gas, electric, and power generation; health, safety and environmental; and leadership and professional development) Experience and exposure to performance consulting, project and change management as well as e-learning development are highly desirable. This role is responsible for the design and effectiveness of training programs including instructor-led, job aids, video, virtual, e-learning delivery modalities for instruction.

The candidate should also have a very strong project management focus and ability to work with all levels of leadership and subject matter experts. Primary responsibilities will be instructional design and development of materials. Experience using ADDIE, SAM or Agile development methodologies is a must.

Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Design learning strategies and programs.

  • Partner with business and human resources leaders to implement learning strategies effectively, ensuring success measures are defined and applied.

  • Partner with the instructional design staff to implement comprehensive talent development solutions that meet ISD and OD specifications. This may include use of the ADDIE or SAM models as well as agile development.

  • Partner with the instructional design staff to develop e-learning and alternative delivery mediums for talent solutions.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor for organizational design, development, and implementation projects. Provide perspective on team effectiveness and offer suggestions for improvement. Partner with leaders to plan interventions as needed, leveraging learning and development knowledge, tools, and technologies to build training plans, programs and organizational interventions.

  • Build organizational effectiveness. Perform organizational assessments, analyze findings, and establish action plans to address issues.

  • Actively participate in major transformation projects, leading one or more work streams within a cross-functional team.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Instructional design/technology, training & development or HR with training focus required.

  • 2+ years of experience in the field of instructional design.

  • Knowledge ADDIE, SAM and/or Agile development methodologies.

  • Master’s Degree in Instructional design/technology, training & development or HR with training focus desired.

  • Strong instructional design expertise in the areas of analysis, design, and e-learning development.

  • Experience with Captivate and Camtasia, or similar e-learning tools desired.

  • Experience working with external vendors, consultants and third-party providers.

  • Collaborative operating style and ability to work effectively throughout the organization.

  • Exposure/experience working in a lean environment, high advantageous

  • Work experience in a regulated, utility desired, but not required

  • Working understanding of Thomas Gilbert Behavior Engineering Module

  • Experience with SAP Success Factors and JAM a plus

  • Experience developing and planning instructional development programs, solutions and metrics linked to the long-term planning and strategy of the company.

  • Strong analytical skills and proven ability to measure effectiveness of learning activities. Experience with Kirkpatrick’s evaluation levels a plus.

  • Experience working with senior leadership and business partners.

  • Experience managing cross-functional and business unit project teams within a complex and integrated organization.

  • Proven ability to effectively facilitate and influence individuals at all levels within an organization.

  • Experience developing learning solutions (ILT, VCT and e-learning) in a corporate setting.

  • Strong ability to work in both teams and remotely with business partners and SMEs.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
