This is the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. Incumbents function in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
This position is in the Grid Solutions Engineering and Planning Department and is responsible for long-range planning of Duke Energy-Florida’s Grid Investment Plan. This oversight will include the identification and prioritization of the targets for the following programs
Self-Optimized Grid (SOG)– this project includes the identification of the target locations for sectionalizing devices (reclosers and switches), the high level identification of connectivity requirements and assessment of capacity needs. This project will be closely coordinated with the Planners in the PQR&I organization to ensure the overall project is worked in the priority that leverages the budget and allows us to maximize the benefits. Targeted Undergrounding (TUG) – this project includes the identification of overhead branchlines that have poor reliability, especially with respect to vegetation outages. This role will support the program through the initial target selections and provide technical support for the Engineer Techs creating the scoping documents needed for the work order creation. Hardening and Resiliency (H&R) – are the more traditional programs that include small wire replacement, transformer retrofit and live front switchgear replacement. In addition to target selection, this role will help define & track the expected benefits (primarily reliability indices) to ensure the program is addressing the issues and adjust the scope of the project as needed moving forward.
The Lead will also coordinate with the various Project Managers to ensure the program is progressing as expected and will report progress/issues to Grid Solutions leadership as needed.
Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment. Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files. Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally. Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals. Qualifications: Basic/Required Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience Registration as a Professional Engineer Desired Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years distribution operations or planning experience Knowledge of distribution system electrical design and operation Experience in the utility industry Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds Demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations Demonstrated effective team work skills Skilled principles of project management
