Local Public Affairs (LPA) is part of Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Government Affairs Organizational Unit. LPA is tasked with earning the active support of government and community leaders to achieve SCE’s vision of a clean energy future.

Position Overview

This position will be a Communications Specialist (CMS3) in the Public Affairs Policy Engagement group in the department of Southern California Edison (SCE)’s Local Public Affairs organization. This position reports to the Policy Engagement Manager and is matrixed to various project teams. The Communications Specialist supports the team with written content for various channels and mediums and also collaborates with other communications specialists in the company to educate and influence stakeholders in support of company policies and projects.

This position, as a part of project teams, will research, create and distribute issue and project written content and reports for both internal and external audiences. Creates and implements communications plans and activities for stakeholder engagement, internal communications, and online and in-person coalition building in support of SCE’s public affairs projects.

Responsibilities to include:

  • Plays a prominent role on the public affairs project team, tasked with recommending and creating a wide variety of content that support public affairs projects. Examples of this would include executive briefings, one pagers, fact sheets, articles, speeches and talking points, digital newsletters and emails. The communications activities support major company policy issues, such as transportation electrification, clean energy grid modernization, customer choice education and current regulatory and legislative issues, as well as infrastructure projects.

  • In collaboration with Corporate Communications, create and manage content to ensure that it is within brand guidelines, leverages existing message platforms but is targeted to Local Public Affairs stakeholders.

  • Works closely with digital and social teams to leverage content and various channels in support of infrastructure projects and policy initiatives.

  • Monitor digital, media and social channels for information that can inform message and content development or targeting.

  • Determine key metrics and processes for measurement; analyze and report performance of content and communication product effectiveness and continuous improvement.

  • Advises and counsels project team counterparts on communications needs, as well as monitoring and informing on external related communications activities.

  • Provides digital and social media monitoring and engagement during emergency situations that occur both during and after normal working hours as part of SCE’s emergency response procedures.


Minimum Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Business, Political Science, Education or related field.

  • Three years of experience working in research, writing, journalism; knowledge and curiosity for social media.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience creating written content that targets and influences public affairs audiences including elected officials, community based organizations and advocacy groups.

  • Five years of experience working in corporate or issues public relations, or public affairs.

  • Understanding of how to use social media tools to effectively listen, communicate, and build relationships with targeted stakeholders.

  • Problem solver; self-starter; high degree of creativity to find new ways to reach and communicate to customers and stakeholders;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong attention to detail.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Salesforce, and Hootsuite/Tweetdeck.

  • Ability to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.

  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.

  • Master’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Business, Education, Political Science or related field.

  • 5 years of experience working on issues or advocacy campaigns, content development and analytics.

  • 5 years of experience working in corporate or issues public relations, or public affairs.

  • Thorough understanding of the key factors driving effective communications in a public affairs environment.

  • Knowledgeable about content trends and best practices in a public affairs environment.
