About the Opportunity

This position is accountable, under general supervision, for managing projects related to the design, implementation, and enhancement of complex fiber optic transport facilities used in the FirstEnergy Wide Area Network. Fiber optic network engineering support and project management for transport circuits is critical for successful 7x24 operations. Fiber optic network transport facilities enable business units to perform their functions and require 24-hour monitoring and support.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Managing Fiber Optic Network Engineering & Operations projects.

  • Championing safe work practices in accordance with all Corporate policies.

  • Making field visits in support of projects, maintenance, or relocations (as necessary).

  • Designing solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective.

  • Defining business cases for new projects and provide detailed support as required to support management decisions.

  • Ensuring that fiber network documentation is up to date.

  • Adhering to Network Services and Energy Delivery drawing standards.

  • Following established IT Operations and network processes.

  • Supporting the 24x7 on-call process by functioning as primary call contact and providing engineering backup to help troubleshoot and repair system/hardware failures or correct performance degradation.

  • Coordinating of fiber optic cabling maintenance and change events that have potential impacts to FirstEnergy active networks. This includes notifying various individuals outside of the department.

  • Using FileNet to access and save FE drawings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Level II - Minimum of three (3) years of experience managing the design, installation, and maintenance of ADSS and OPGW fiber cables, below and/or within the electrical transmission & distribution power space.

  • Level III - Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing the design, installation, and maintenance of ADSS and OPGW fiber cables, below and/or within the electrical transmission & distribution power space.

  • Leadership skills and ability to work closely with people in various departments of the Energy Delivery organization on project requirements, cost and schedule.

  • Familiar with ADSS and OPGW cable design and suspension hardware.

  • Experience with fusion splicing and terminations of MMF and SMF cables in splice cases and on Fiber Distribution Panels.

  • Basic knowledge of electrical distribution and transmission systems.

  • Troubleshooting skills in optical networks.

  • Experience with managing right of way and permit issues.

  • General knowledge of OSHA, NESC, and other standards required for installation of fiber in the power space.

  • Must be able to read and understand construction documents.

  • Knowledge of mapping programs used for documentation of fiber optic cable routes.

  • Understanding of underground locating requirements and services.

  • Familiar with optical network technologies (e.g. DWDM, SONET, MPLS, etc.) that use fiber optic cables as a transport medium.

  • Experience with drawing tools like AutoCAD and Visio.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, or Electronics Technology.

  • Knowledge of incident management systems like HP Service Manager that are used to track problems and planned activities.
