Duke Energy Progress seeks an engineer to prepare designs of linear facilities for bulk power high line transmission facilities with rated voltages of 115kV through 500 kV in the Transmission Line Engineering Unit in Raleigh NC. The person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project work plans for transmission line projects. Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required (10%); must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies. Skill sets desired: • Interpret and utilize ground or aerial survey data • Direct and review soil boring data • Utilize PLSCADD design software for pole spotting, conductor sagging, and structural analysis. • Assess transmission line grounding requirements and lightning mitigation (shield angle, arrester installation, BIL, etc) • Produce construction drawings, bills of material, and cost estimates necessary to install high voltage transmission lines. • Understand and be able to work in a project management environment. • Be able to deal with all levels of customer influence in a positive and professional manner • Multitask on multiple projects. • Assist with production of right-of-way clearing plans. • Utilize Microstation and AutoCAD to manipulate existing drawings and create new drawings. • Review and render judgment on encroachment requests based on Duke Energy Progress and NESC requirements. • Ability to travel on the Duke Energy Progress system (primarily NC and SC) as necessary (approx. 10% travel required) Major responsibilities include: 1. Work within a project team environment to produce a design release packages. 2. Using the best available procedures and methods to design, estimate, and release to construction, engineered plans to facilitate the installation of high voltage transmission lines. 3. All work assignments will be performed in a manner consistent with the Duke Energy Safety Manual as well as with Federal, State, and local laws. Most importantly, all project activities and work activities will be completed in a sound and cost-effective manner that contributes to the safety of Company employees and the public, reliability of service, and appropriate protection of the environment. 4. Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks. 5. Assist Siting and Permitting unit in determination of the best transmission line routes / reroutes / relocations according to environmental, land use, engineering, and economic factors with respect to a prescribed schedule 6. Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others. 7. Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. 8. Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations. 9. Understanding of basic principles of project management 10. Performing structural analyses using software tools such as PLSACADD and MFAD. 11. Communicating information to the public / customers, Customer Service Center, construction and construction contractors, internal engineering units, Acquisition Agents, other power companies, government regulators, etc. with regard to transmission line location in a professional manner. 12. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner. Qualifications: Basic Qualifications Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program AND state registration as a Professional Engineer(PE). A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree. Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience. Desired Qualifications M.S.
