What does the Utility Plant Accounting Department do?

  • Responsible for processing and maintaining the Company’s fixed asset records;

  • Develop the depreciation budget based on annual Capital Construction Budget and perform monthly capital budget variance analysis;

  • Fulfill various regulatory and legal reporting requirements for the Public Service Commission (“PSC”), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) and NY State Office of Real Property;

  • Responsible for the month/quarter/year-end closing processes for the fixed asset system including preparation and review of required accounting entries and providing support for disclosures and audit.

What does an Accountant do?

  • Completion of complex accounting transactions;

  • Preparation of internal and external financial reports including GAAP financial statements and Notes, Board of Director reports, and required regulatory filings;

  • Researching, interpreting and implementing new accounting and reporting standards related to construction or fixed asset accounting in accordance with FASB requirements;

  • Performing variation analyses versus budget and prior periods.

What does it take to be an Accountant?

Required Skills:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration related field of study; with at least one year of fixed asset accounting experience;

  • Working knowledge of current FASB pronouncements related to construction or fixed asset accounting and ability to assist in research and implementation of new pronouncements as necessary;

  • Strong Computer skills including a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel;

  • Strong organization and documentation skills;

  • High regard for personal accountability and seeks opportunities to continuously improve business processes;

  • Well-developed written/verbal communication skills with the ability to multi-task;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with internal customers and in an interactive team environment;

  • Possess the ability to work in a deadline-oriented, fast paced environment;

  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Skills:

  • CPA a plus;

  • Utility accounting experience and knowledge of FERC accounting regulations a plus;

  • Working knowledge of construction cost accounting, capital expenditure budgeting and monitoring;

  • Working knowledge of PCAOB standards relating to Sarbanes Oxley;

  • Working experience with Lean Six Sigma managerial concepts.
