This is the first level of the Protection and Control Engineering classification. Assistant Engineers provide engineering/technical expertise to solve problems, and leadership skills to provide oversight of work in a specific area of expertise, with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills in their field of study, and the ability to work with greater independence.
With close supervision, the candidate may:
Attend project site meets with stakeholders to fully develop the electrical scope of substation work.
Create and/or revise substation schemes and wiring (single-line, three-line, AC , DC, SCADA, relay and metering.) Produce electrical BOM and material orders
Create Substation communication designs to support SCADA, remote relay access and network security
Create Protective Relay application documentation, scheme designs, and settings
Perform electrical engineering analysis, calculations, and documentation to support design recommendations. Maintain accurate records and files.
Manage contracted engineering services to ensure compliance with Duke standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
Develop collaborative, effective working relationships with peers and customers.
Support the company’s goals and represent the company positively and professionally.
Strive to continually improve job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance Qualifications: Requirements:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
Understanding of basic practice of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Good written and oral communication skills
BSEE degree from an ABET accredited university
Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Relevant experience in the electric utility (or similar) industry.
