About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FENOC, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [PEN]

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical / analytical guidance regarding OSHA and DOT regulations, as well as the consensus standards (i.e., NFPA, ASTM, ANSI, etc.)

  • Understanding and application of safety rules, along with consulting and advising directors, managers, supervisors, employees and other personnel with respect to the Company's safety program and performance

  • Educating employees on safe work practices, investigating accidents, and taking steps to prevent reoccurrences

  • Overseeing fall protection, scaffold erection/dismantling, permit required work and asbestos (building inspector) needs

  • Preparing and filing safety records/reports, as well as maintaining monthly accident frequency/severity ratings and reviewing accident reports

  • Assisting in coordinating the Company DOT/CDL and safety-sensitive drug and alcohol programs and overseeing all security issues

  • Supporting multiple plant safety committees

  • Working with Corporate Health & Safety to conduct industrial hygiene assessments and devise monitoring plans

  • Performing safety audits and conducting hazard assessments while prescribing the proper means of approved personal protective equipment

  • Coordinating initial and re-qualification of General Employee Training (GET) and arranging for courses as necessary for new and existing employees

  • Travel as necessary between plant locations to meetings and to provide support


  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene related sciences, or degree in a relevant field with equivalent experience in safety, or equivalent demonstrated field experience

  • At least three years of Safety or Industrial Hygiene experience in industry

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Operations or Operations Training in the nuclear industry required.

  • Ability to obtain an advanced safety certificate from the National Safety Council (or equivalent) as required

  • Knowledge of plant operations preferred

  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations and demonstrations to diverse audiences

  • Experience investigating and developing new safety methods and techniques, as well as investigating equipment safety compliance

  • Demonstrated experience with the rules and regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Department of Labor and the Workers' Compensation laws of OH.

  • Ability to become an accredited instructor in primary and advance first aid and CPR courses

  • Possess a cooperative temperament and have demonstrated the ability to create and maintain a positive working relationship with other departments

  • Exceptional ability to create and promote cooperation and teamwork

  • Demonstrated leadership ability to champion positive change

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a personally owned or leased vehicle to commute to various facilities throughout the assigned territory
