Exelon Corporation Cable Splicer Helper SCD NERC in Newark, Delaware
Under close supervision, assists in working on de-energized and energized polyphase overhead and underground systems. Required to do maintenance work, including asbestos removal. Operates and drives limited vehicular and material handling equipment. Assists in the excavation and placement of de-energized and energized underground lines and equipment.
Under close supervision regularly and customarily assists Cable Splicer by the preparation of materials, tools and equipment and by anticipating his requirements.
May be required to do maintenance work such as: inspecting and cleaning manholes, painting laterals and other equipment, etc. May do asbestos removal.
Takes necessary training to qualify for Junior Cable Splicer and attends lineman training course.
Performs other related or less skilled work as required or directed.
Operates and drives limited types of construction equipment.
Uses hand tools and monitoring equipment.
Assists in excavating and installation of conduits, cables, gas pipe, wires, manhole pull holes and duct systems, etc.
Assists in erecting and working from scaffolding and platforms.
Note: Eligible upon demonstration of ability, fitness and other qualification after at least twelve (12) months as Cable Splicer Helper for promotion upon Company recommendation to grade of Junior Cable Splicer.
Ability and willingness to work on or around hazardous equipment/materials (for example, solder pots, open flames, heavy equipment, etc.), and/or energized electrical equipment.
Ability and willingness to work in a variety of work environments including:
• all weather conditions;
• at extreme heights (above 30 feet, in a bucket, from scaffolding);
• in very tight, confined spaces or enclosed vessels;
• below grade;
• in dark areas or areas with limited lighting;
• in extreme temperatures, foul water, mud, dust, noxious fumes, noisy and dirty environments with proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
• in high traffic areas and pedestrian walkways.
Ability and willingness to perform both indoor and outdoor tasks for extended periods of time including:
• lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 200 pounds with assistance;
• climbing ladders and scaffolding;
• bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pulling/pushing, standing, walking, and squatting.
Ability and willingness to wear and use safety equipment as required by Federal, State, Local and Company regulations (for example, ear plugs, helmets, steel toed shoes, rubber gloves and sleeves, hard hat, fire retardant clothing).
Ability and willingness to work rotating shift work, on holidays and weekends, and overtime and be on call as required.
Ability and willingness to wear a respirator and/or dust mask as required (e.g., asbestos removal, dust, sprays/filings).
Ability and willingness to travel to various Company locations and job sites.
Ability and willingness to distinguish among differently colored wires.
Must be 21 years of age or older and possess a CMV with Class A and a medical card OR the ability to obtain each within six months of hire date.
Must successfully pass qualification tests including paper and pencil tests and a Task Specific Exercise that requires performing physically demanding tasks continuously throughout the test period, including removing manhole covers, climbing and working in a manhole, lowering a solder pot and tools into a manhole, rolling and pulling cable, and installing cable supports in a manhole.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must successfully pass a Criminal History Records Check.
This position is a NERC Regulated position. As such, a background check will be conducted on the incumbent every seven years. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to complete annual NERC compliance training.
Experience demonstrating skill using hand tools (e.g., hammers, screwdrivers, ratchets, wrenches, pliers, saws).
Experience demonstrating skill safely testing and opening manholes.
Experience demonstrating skill heating and preparing compound and solder for splicing.
Experience demonstrating skill preparing splice kits for higher classified employees.
Experience demonstrating skill rodding, sealing, and cleaning duct lines.
Experience demonstrating skill utilizing power tools, hydraulic presses and cutters.
Experience demonstrating skill performing manual labor (e.g., shopkeeping, obtaining tools, loading and unloading trucks).
