Qualifications: O&R; Substation Operations is seeking to hire a Manager to join its team. This position requires candidates to demonstrate in the application they possess the following skills and abilities:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a minimum of 3 years experience in the engineering or operation/maintenance of the electric system, preferably within substations.

  • Must have prior supervisory experience.

  • Must have a working knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems.

  • Must have demonstrated a high work ethic, possess strong decision-making skills, have the ability to work independently, flexible to handle multiple assignments and meets deadlines.

  • Must demonstrate computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and Oracle. Experience with related work management and financial systems are preferred.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively work with all levels of management and contract personnel. Must have the ability to interact in the activities of a large group in an effective manner.

  • Must be able to balance priorities, handle multiple assignments and take decisive action.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, promote a positive work ethic and demonstrate ability to foster a team spirited work environment in support of the Company’s Corporate Values, Mission, and Code of Conduct.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able and willing to travel within the Company service territory, as needed.

  • This position requires a criminal background check to satisfy NERC critical infrastructure protection requirements.

  • Must be willing and available 24/7, and available to be on call, and/or participate in off-hour emergency response activities as required.

Responsibilities: Under general supervision of the Section Manager, the Manager (Substations) will plan, control and coordinate the assignments and activities of all Substation and Relay personnel to effect the safe, timely and efficient installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of all substation equipment for approximately 90 substation facilities across the entire O&R; service territory. Plans capital, new business, reliability, load relief and emergency restoration work as required. Acts as the department’s liaison for various capital and O&M; projects coordinating resource requirements with System Operations, Engineering, New Business and the Environmental Health and Safety Departments.

Plans, implements and directs Substation Operations programs and work activities in accordance with applicable procedures and specifications without compromising safety or system integrity and reliability. Evaluates the performance and integrity of the O&R; Substation electrical systems and participates in the development and implementation of goals and plans to improve the reliability of the system. Ensures compliance with Company procedures, policies, specifications and all applicable regulatory codes. Monitors adherence to government and regulatory requirements and directly interfaces with their representatives. Actively seeks methods to increase customer experience. Ensures the efficient scheduling of crews to effect the timely completion of projects, such as load relief, system reliability, equipment maintenance and repairs, and emergency response in accordance with applicable Company specifications and governmental regulations. Plans, organizes and schedules the assignment of Company and contract forces to optimize productivity and meet departmental and Company goals.

Prepares and implements emergency equipment restoration and repair plans as necessary to ensure system reliability. Establishes the annual maintenance and capital plans and prepares station specific schedules in accordance with the established department goals and adherence to the applicable budgets. Inputs outages and monitors same via WMS/SIRS to ensure periodic maintenance and emergency repairs are completed in a timely fashion. Develops and implements programs to maximize productivity by utilizing and monitoring the Work Management System (WMS) and reviews performance reports. Establishes methods to improve work performance and maintain a high degree of effectiveness by reducing delay and other non-productive time. Manages and administers data to various substation programs including Substation Information System, WMS, Oracle and the Online Test Results System.

Coordinates and controls the activities associated with the availability and timely delivery of material, parts and equipment. Directly supervises the clerical staff to ensure accurate record keeping and time reporting. Acts as the liaison for large power customers who contract the Substation Operations department to perform work on an emergency and periodic basis. Prepares back-up documentation for billing accounts. Creates and monitors departmental purchase orders, P-card and capital expenditure requests while ensuring compliance to corporate and departmental policies. Participates in the Company’s emergency management processes and storm plans as required. Performs other related assignments as required.
