AREVA NP is a global leader in all activities associated with the design and operation of nuclear power reactors. The Fuel Business group is focused on design and production of nuclear fuel for commercial light water reactors.

  • Fuel Materials and Thermal & Mechanical Department: *

The Lynchburg Materials & Thermal Mechanics organization is responsible for a broad range of activities covering PWR fuel assembly materials development and manufacturing support, PWR fuel rod thermal-mechanical analyses, PWR control component analyses, and fuel rod performance code development. The department’s activities are coordinated with other AREVA fuel engineering departments both locally and worldwide.

Materials engineers within the department offer direct support to resolve manufacturing problems, as well as work on teams which improve manufacturing processes and/or material performance. Related activities include maintenance and revision of material product specifications and qualification reports.

Material & Fuel Performance data is routinely gathered from post-irradiation measurements. This data must be reduced and evaluated against existing databases. The updated databases need to be periodically incorporated into revised material models within the fuel rod codes and methods.

Materials engineers support research efforts aimed at improving current materials as well as developing new alloys. They provide the materials expertise in support of licensing new materials and applications.

  • Job Description: *

AREVA is seeking a Materials Engineer. This qualified candidate will be involved in Nuclear Fuel materials support for design engineering and fuel manufacturing. Typical assignments include:

  • Develop materials specifications for nuclear fuel components

  • Provide materials expertise for development programs and for direct manufacturing support.

  • Interface with company-owned and external material suppliers to develop a strong understanding of how alloying and manufacturing processes might influence performance of nuclear fuel under irradiation.

  • Interface with utilities, EPRI, DOE and other entities (internal and external) regarding material testing and development programs.

  • Plan and Implement R&D program for novel fuel designs and materials.

  • Evaluate post-irradiation data with respect to material performance

  • Assist in the preparation of material behavior models for the development of codes to predict behavior under normal, transient, and accident conditions needed for safety analysis and licensing.

  • Interface with other AREVA and customer contacts to carry out responsibilities.

  • Engineer III- BS in Materials Science Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with 3-5 years ofextensivematerials experience. An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs or PhD 1-3 yrs).

  • Engineer IV- BS in Materials Science Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with 5-7 years ofextensivematerials experience. An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs or PhD 1-3 yrs).

  • Principal Engineer- BS in Materials Science Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with 7-10 years ofextensivematerials experience. An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs or PhD 1-3 yrs).

  • Also accept a related engineering degree with appropriate work experience.

  • Positive and effective team interaction skills, along with a positive peer relationship skills.

  • Leadership and initiative in meeting customer requirements.

  • Excellent communication skills (oral / presentation / written), and the ability to effectively communicate and coordinate activities among the diverse groups within AREVA and with customers.

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.

  • Experience with metallic co-extrusion and metallic/diffusion bonding design or manufacturing.

  • Metallurgical engineering experience in the nuclear industry and familiarity with required engineering quality and controls in this industry.

  • Materials experience and expertise with uranium, zirconium, and nickel-based alloys, stainless steels, and UO2 ceramics.

  • Design of components based on a strong understanding of metalworking/forming processes.

  • Experience in scientific/technical code development and programming (Fortran and C ), and in technical document preparation and review.

  • French language skills

  • Able to support international travel (or optional expat assignment to France).

  • TRAVEL *

Sporadic (<15%) Typical travel for this position is moderate, typically involving up to 8 business trips per year (assuming 5 days for each trip) to AREVA sites, vendor sites; or in support of industry technical meeting. Expatriate assignment to Lyon France is also being considered for this position.
