Job Summary

The Chemistry Technician reports to the Technical Services Manager and works closely with the Chemist III as a member of the plant operations and maintenance team of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import/export and liquefaction/re-gasification terminal, including LNG process systems, infrastructure, and power/steam generation. Dedication, sensitivity to safety issues and compliance with policies and procedures is essential for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the terminal.

The successful candidate must be willing to work in an industrial environment and will provide technical support to the operations and maintenance departments at the terminal. Approximately 45-55% of their time will be spent performing field work, including system troubleshooting and directing operations and maintenance activities in accordance with applicable codes and regulatory requirements.

The Chemistry Technician will apply his/her knowledge of chemistry in the day-to-day operations and processes of the terminal. The successful candidate will interact daily with Operations, Maintenance, and Management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Mastery of the subject matter or diversified knowledge of principles and practice in broad areas of assignments and related fields:

  • Performs various chemical analyses in support of operations.

  • Performs cycle water, boiler water, fuel, environmental water, and lube oil analyses.

  • Maintain, calibrate, and perform preventative maintenance on benchtop and inline chemistry instrumentation.

  • Ensure analyses conform to Quality Control Program.

  • Supports unit startup by ensuring chemistry levels are within acceptable ranges, and recommending needed adjustments.

  • Performs various environmental tests to ensure plant operations are within regulatory guidelines. Maintains laboratory chemical inventory.

  • Monitors operations of the cooling tower and other water treatment systems, such as the potable and waste water treatment facilities to ensure chemical levels are within regulatory guidelines.

  • Prepares and verifies accuracy of reports for submittal to regulatory agencies. Maintains laboratory data and logs.

  • Conducts chemical and physical lab or field tests.

  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

  • Exercises independent judgment and decision-making in planning, organizing and conducting work assignments.

  • May receive instructions and guidance on unusual or complex problems and knows when to get others involved.

  • Effectively utilizes the proper resources to develop solutions and devise new approaches to problems encountered in work assignments.

  • Experience with Windows based computer programs such as Excel, Powerpoint, and Word.

Education Equivalent

  • Minimum of an Associates degree in Chemistry

Additional Working Conditions

  • Approximately 45-55% of their time will be spent performing field work

  • May involve working extended hours, nights, weekends, and off-hours call out.

  • Safety sensitive position subject to DOT Random Drug Testing.

  • Work around flammable gasses and liquids.

  • Subject to outside environmental conditions during all seasons.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and operate a company vehicle.

  • Must live within reasonable commuting distance of Cove Point LNG Terminal, Lusby, MD.
