Position Purpose Manages relationships with media outlets for Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities. Coordinates company responses to media inquiries. Performs various Corporate Communications assignments involving media relations, public relations, corporate communications, events and special projects. Rotates being on-call as a company spokesperson, and works to strengthen interest, understanding and goodwill among key stakeholders, especially in the Lexington area.
Education & Experience Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, or a related field. Eight or more years direct experience.
Preferred Qualifications Extremely high level of independence to research and help shape the public information strategy and tactics employed by the company. Excellent ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Experience with public speaking, writing, presentation development and basic business issues. Knowledge of the energy industry a plus.
Job Description Working closely with the department vice president, director and media team, helping plan and execute the company’s media relations strategies. Also, along with the department vice president, director and media team members, handles media spokesperson duties with a primary focus on the Kentucky Utilities service territory, including Virginia.
Assists in managing the image of the company externally through media relations, speeches and other external communications, community relations and public relations means. Assists with public relations activities involving employees, agencies, press and the public. Helps plan and organize news conferences and related activities.
Develops, writes and edits press releases, fact sheets, presentations and other external materials as required by the Media Relations team. Provides support to the Internal Communications group, writing articles and news stories for distribution within the company. Prepares or helps coordinate presentations, scripts, displays, visuals and slides.
Assists the Director of Media Relations in oversight of Lexington media and other outlets throughout Kentucky and five counties in Virginia.
Provides proactive, effective communications support and counsel to assigned in-house clients. Successful client relationships require regular attendance at staff meetings, learning the client's business needs and communications challenges, developing internal and external stories and other communications about initiatives/programs for clients' various audiences (employees, customers, media, community), and managing special projects. Provides bimonthly report of client activity to supervisor.
Interacts regularly with executive management and Corporate Responsibility to keep abreast of external communications needs of the company and to be continually prepared to proactively promote company positions externally.
Assists with communications initiatives.
All other duties and projects as assigned.
Work Conditions Normal office environment. Attending meetings and responding to issues during evenings or weekends is expected.
Physical Effort Primarily sitting with some standing and walking.
