Job Summary

Dominion is currently seeking an experienced structural engineer to join the Civil Engineering group in the corporate office in Glen Allen, VA.

Job duties include:

  • Analyze and design structural steel and reinforced concrete nuclear power plant structures for static and dynamic loading.

  • Prepare technical reports for the evaluation of existing structures

  • Inspections of company owned structures and facilities and prepare reports summarizing findings and recommendations.

  • Prepare construction specifications and oversee the production of structural drawings.

  • Evaluate modifications to structural steel and reinforced concrete structures and work with construction forces to resolve field problems.

  • Plan and organize multiple tasks. Assist in development of project schedules and estimates

  • Interpret and apply codes and standards as part of daily work assignments

  • Be able to utilize various revisions of a design code or standard.

  • Provide technical guidance to less proficient engineers

  • Work effectively as a member of a multi-discipline project team

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and written, with members of the project team and upper management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience


BS Civil Engineering is acceptable, with MS Civil Engineering candidates strongly preferred. Minimum of 10 years experience in the field of structural engineering is required (PhD can be substituted for one or multiple years of required experience, depending on work history).Part of the 10 years of experience must be in the application of finite element methods for frame, plate and shell type structures.

A working knowledge of structural dynamics as it applies to civil engineering structures is also necessary. The successful candidate must have the ability to analyze and design frame, plate and shell type structures for extreme loads such as seismic, impact and blast loads utilizing both linear and nonlinear analysis methods. The successful candidate will also have the ability to perform plastic analyses and experience in using software with both implicit and explicit analysis solvers.

  • Experience in ANSI/AISC N690, ASCE 4-98, ASCE/SEI 7-10, or ASCE/SEI 43-05 is desirable.

  • Working knowledge of ACI 318, ACI 349, and AISC 360 (Manual of Steel Construction) is required.

  • Strong leadership skills which will allow the successful candidate to lead an engineering team on complex multi-discipline projects

  • PE or the ability to obtain a PE within 1 year

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
