Responsible for the internal and external communications of Xcel Energy regional issues, including rates and regulatory issues, state and local government affairs, employee grassroots and political action activities, and economic development. Manages a group of communication professionals whose primary clients are the company's legal entities: PSCo and SPS. Is accountable to anticipate issues and seek opportunities to promote employee and public understanding of company positions. Create and manage the execution of communications and public relations strategies; work may involve significant interaction with external organizations. Ensure that best practices, experiences, and knowledge are captured and applied in all deliverables.
Manage a team of jurisdictional communication professionals and vendor-partners. Create performance metrics, track performance, and provide feedback to staff to ensure internal client satisfaction.
Proactively anticipate and research issues related to areas such as state and local government affairs, regulatory filings, grassroots and political action activities, public affairs, and economic development. Is ready to respond and provide counsel to jurisdictional leaders by recommending strategic solutions to problems that may occur. Develop communications and public relations plans and strategies for internal and external audiences.
Track and monitor communication improvements/advancements throughout the industry. Brings best practices, including new relevant communications technologies, media, and tools to Xcel Energy and ensure staff familiarity with them. Provide professional development opportunities to enhance employee skills and knowledge.
Serve as a resource to staff and teams whose work significantly affects or is relevant to client base; works in close coordination with other communications professionals to create alignment of efforts. Understand and sponsor the Xcel Energy brand and ensures adherence to brand standards. Demonstrate and assist staff to understand and demonstrate behaviors based upon corporate values.
Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or related field.
Minimum of 8 years experience in communications, preferably in a corporate environment, with work in legislative and governmental issues, grassroots organization, public affairs, and economic development.
Experience in direct client service or account management role.
Two years experience managing a communications team.
Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of Xcel Energy and utility industry experience is preferred.
This position requires a behavioral assessment prior to being considered for an interview.
