Although Charlotte is preferred, this position can also be located in other North and South Carolina Duke Energy locations This position will function under general direction with minimal supervision, providing engineering and technical expertise to support the Business Development team in pursuit of investment opportunities, including acquisitions and greenfield development projects. Applicants are expected to have advanced engineering skills and understand distributed energy technologies, primarily solar, but also have familiarity and/or advanced knowledge of wind, energy storage, microgrids and combined heat and power (CHP). This position will: · Provide technical expertise and oversight to technical matters throughout the development process with a heavy focus on utility-scale and commercial PV system design, engineering, construction methods, and system production modeling. · Provide PV system performance inputs to the Project financial model, including first year production and extending throughout the lifecycle of the Project. · Utilize knowledge of PV project engineering, electric generating facilities, renewable energy, utility interconnection requirements and control/metering schemes to evaluate, identify, and mitigate commercial risks associated with proposed Project designs. This position must work collaboratively to ensure strategic integration with key internal business unit stakeholders, including Project Management and Construction (PMC), Supply Chain, Transmission, and Health & Safety, among others. The position may also require management of third-party consultants. This position may be filled at a higher level, based upon applicants knowledge and experience. Responsibilities and Experience · Greenfield Development o Support greenfield development through site screening and selection, key studies, preliminary design, cost estimates, permitting, and overall technical due-diligence. o Proficient in PV production modeling and modeling tools such as PVSyst o Experience with creating and submitting interconnection requests for distributed energy projects and analyzing study results o Engineering design and business development experience with utility-scale solar. Experience with commercial rooftop and canopy solar project design is a plus. o Knowledge of energy storage technology, battery chemistries, and integration with solar · EPC contract negotiations o Work with Supply Chain on issuing RFPs and determining contracting strategy o Support negotiations for warranties, Performance Guarantees, and Liquidated Damages o Work with PMC on negotiating appropriate design and construction schedules with counterparties o Lead the ongoing monitoring and maintenance strategy for projects, provide cost estimates, and resource requirements · System Optimization o Lead efforts to optimize PV system design and output o Work with transmission and distribution organizations on interconnection requests and study results o Work with Central Engineering Services and PMC on optimizing design criteria and standards for solar facilities · Technology selection o Work with Supply Chain on selecting manufacturers for key equipment components, including panels, racking, inverters, transformers, and communication systems. o Maintain equipment supplier relationships and advise Supply Chain and PMC on renewable technology and price trends

Qualifications: Basic Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. A minimum of 3 years of the experience must be in engineering of utility-scale and/or commercial PV systems. Qualifying experience shall include direct technical involvement in all portions of PV site development, from project inception through commissioning.
