SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Meter Reader reads electrical and gas meters for commercial and residential clients in urban and rural settings. The Meter Reader collects data from residential meters through use of a computer system that receives radio signals broadcast by meters when the operator drives (typically) within 100 meters to 2 miles of the meter. To collect commercial meter data, the operator follows a pre-designated walking route. The commercial meter data is manually inputted. The meter reader must be able to accurately and efficiently read meters, manually input data into a handheld computer, walk frequently (including on uneven terrain), interact with customers as needed, and work and drive in all weather conditions.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • All NorthWestern Energy employees are required to adhere to company safety standards and the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics

  • Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and strategic business objectives

  • Read electric and gas meters including accurately inputting meter data into a handheld computer

  • Work overtime as necessary

  • Complete required paper or computer work

  • Interact with the public to issue billing notices, answer common questions, and / or document and refer concerns to appropriate NorthWestern Energy resources

  • Remain alert for leaks, malfunctioning equipment, or units in need of gross repair during general meter reading duties

  • Report issues to appropriate parties in a timely manner when issues are detected

  • Drive to, from, and within meter routes including commercial-meter walking routes

  • Perform vehicle inspection as required

MARGINAL WORK FUNCTIONS

*These functions may be considered essential based on location and other factors.

  • Assist utility crew members to locate meters (may include evening or weekend work, particularly during acute service outages)*

  • Maintain and organize equipment required to perform Meter Reader tasks

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record

  • Possession of or ability to obtain First Aid/CPR Certification

  • Must be able to demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
