Job Description Summary:

Role and Scope of Position:

Leads team that includes Supervisor and Environmental Specialists to oversee compliance, strategy, and development of work practices for corporate environmental work across New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Drives high level company wide initiatives including development and advancement of the corporate environmental strategy, sustainability reporting, climate efforts, and support for corporate clean energy initiatives.

Oversees team responsible for facility compliance program for corporate buildings and work centers to ensure the requirements of state and federal laws are met.

Works closely with operations, facilities, and other staff to ensure rules and procedures are clearly communicated and followed in the field.

Develops excellent relationships with local, state and federal regulators and for ensuring regulatory commitments are tracked and met.

Tracks developing federal, state and local regulatory requirements to ensure impacts are well understood and communicated, and input is provided in regulatory development.

Develops and delivers briefings and executive level presentations.

Represents company speaking on panels, working with stakeholder groups, and serving on boards and commissions, as well as testifying in front of regulatory authorities (as needed).

  • Manages work team responsible for technical, compliance and strategic functions.
  • Develops and oversees corporate environmental strategy and sustainability initiatives, working closely with internal partners (regulatory, communications, operations, investor relations) as well as external stakeholders to communicate green leadership and advance environmental goals.
  • Drives progress and oversees reporting on corporate compliance, key initiatives and performance targets.
  • Develops business practices and procedures that ensure compliance with state and federal rules and works with internal staff to ensure they are followed.
  • Communicates effectively on corporate initiatives and regulatory developments to executives and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and decision making, including under fast paced timelines.
  • Demonstrates strong ethical standards and leadership qualities.
  • Fosters team work and collaboration.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state rules in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire (including RCRA, TSCA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, federal and state climate rules). Excellent relationships with state and federal regulators.

Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to non-technical audiences. Ability to drive initiatives and develop strong strategies.

Understanding of gas and electric utility operations.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field required; Masters’ degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years environmental experience including 5 or more years managing/overseeing environmental professionals. Experience with utility operations (as employee or consultant) favorable.

Working Conditions:

Fast paced working environment with multiple projects and stakeholders. The job requires travel throughout the Eversource service territory of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire to support projects objectives and actively manage a decentralized staff. Position requires some field presence to ensure corporate policies and initiatives are well aligned with field operations.

Problem Solving & Complexity:

Due to the fast paced environment of field response, issues arise that require immediate attention and resolution. Many issues are complex and will require assessment against regulatory requirements with Environmental Affairs leadership and legal counsel. Sound judgment, excellent communication, strong regulatory experience and quick decision making is required.
