GIS Specialists (Centralized & Lighting)

Job Location : 755 Jefferson Street, Atlanta, GA

Job Summary : 

This position resides within the Geographic Solutions and Services organization and is responsible for the input, processing, and maintenance of Distribution data in accordance with GSS work procedures and Southern Company GIS Data strategy. This position requires the ability to create, edit and extract GIS data. Also, the GIS Specialist will ensure projects are completed accurately and within required deadlines.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in GIS or Geography is highly preferred

  • Associates Degree or Certificate in GIS is strongly preferred 

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience using ESRI suite of GIS tools

  • Working knowledge of enterprise GIS database

  • Experience utilizing ArcFM, and Express Sketch

  • Strong computer skills

  • Maintain high standards for data quality within all applications

Job Responsibilities:

  • Post edits to the DistGIS database accurately and timely

  • Create specialized map products using ESRI mapping applications

  • Perform analysis using ESRI GIS tools

  • Create Lighting Design Analysts construction prints using ESRI mapping applications

  • Reconcile database conflicts and take appropriate action to improve database performance

  • Ensure to maintain customer accuracy by properly linking metered accounts

  • Ensure to update the distribution model using GSS applications

  • Support Power Delivery Distribution and Lighting and Smart Services partners

  • Demonstrate ownership of assigned work

  • Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot problems and implement solutions

  • Work within a flexible, fast changing team environment ensuring customer needs are met

  • Understanding of basic electric distribution design and construction

  • Experience with lighting types, fixtures, and controls

  • Ability to interpret and apply consistent standards to mapping product

  • Able to maintain focus on assigned task

  • Familiar with data manipulation techniques

  • Strong computer skills in standard software packages (Microsoft Office products, etc.) is required

  • Ability to perform spatial analysis

  • Ability to create, query, and update databases (SQL, Oracle, MS Access)

  • Experience with database development
