About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FENOC, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEG]

The Nuclear Probabilistic Risk Analysis Engineer at FirstEnergy within FENOC (FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company) is a multiple discipline engineer who performs updates and upgrades the plant probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) computer software models to reflect the as built as operated nuclear power plants.

Responsibilities for the position include:

  • Providing software development, troubleshooting and implementation/upgrades of engineering software.

  • Translating and optimizing PRA modeling processes.

  • Developing new PRA application to improve plant operation and processes.

  • Validating and interpreting PRA results.

  • Developing insights given uncertainty in the analysis, communicating those results to plant management, Operations, the NRC, INPO, and industry groups as required.

  • Understanding the integrated plant operation and actions taken to mitigate challenges including both design basis and beyond design basis events.

  • Understanding work management, scheduling, and maintenance planning processes.

  • Analyzing complex interrelated events and mitigative actions associated with internal and external hazards that could impact plant operation.

  • Performing any or all of the following or related studies:

  1. Core and plant wide analysis (thermal or hydraulic) to establish core and plant parameters during normal plant operation, evaluation of transients and accident sequences; reactor plant design and modification impact analysis;

  2. human reliability analysis, data analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, statistical analysis, room heat up analysis; reactor containment analysis;

  3. fire hazard analysis; internal and external flooding analysis; seismic and civil structural affects analysis; high winds analysis, etc.

  • Acting as project manager on large scale multi discipline technical projects related to PRA model development and upgrade.

  • Evaluating, monitoring, and conducting trend analyses on the performance of all nuclear systems and/or components important to nuclear safety.

  • Informing systems surveillance frequencies, availability and reliability performance criteria, and mitigating systems criteria.

  • Reviewing for integration into the PRA and also risk informs future design changes, operations procedure changes, and other related process changes.

  • Providing technical oversight to all risk informed applications.

  • Providing training to plant personnel on PRA and risk informed applications and the use of PRA tools.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required. Bachelor’s degree in Computer, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.

  • Experience in Probabilistic Risk Analysis is preferred.

  • Highly skilled in use of computers and advanced engineering software.

  • Prior professional-level engineering experience is preferred.

  • Must be able to work independently in leadership and mentoring roles with little Supervisory involvement.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong analytical ability.

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with all employees at FirstEnergy.

  • Able to deliver quality and accurate work within established deadlines.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make formal technical presentations to various management levels.

  • Ability to work extended hours, shift schedules and perform on-call duties when necessary.

  • Must poses strong communication skills and able to translate complex concepts.
