About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

The SOC Engineer is responsible for the customization of Security Operations Center (SOC) data sets, technologies, and events to satisfy SOC use case requirements. The SOC Engineer will primarily develop new architecture and data gathering techniques for those currently not in the SIEM. Additional responsibilities include providing backup assistance for content development and other engineering projects.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing and implementing a security centric data lake solution within FirstEnergy.

  • Being the primary technical leadership, architect, and roadmap owner

  • Solid understanding of data quality, data management, data visualization, and predictive analytics concepts.

  • Experience with the installation and maintenance of SAS in large scale complex environments such as High Availability (multiple machine, shard, multi-tiered environment).

  • Experience creating and implementing complex Data Architectures.

  • Providing technical leadership and support for data quality (DQ) technology, including development, data profiling, and data quality assessments.

  • Building self-monitoring, robust, scalable interfaces and data pipelines for 24/7 operations.

  • Developing a Threat Identification Program (Threat Hunting).

  • Working in collaboration with SOC Analysts to create new data driven indicator collection, analysis, and reporting procedures.

  • Defining observational study designs and execute data gathering techniques with automation where applicable.

  • Continuous tasking of threat to dataset relationship mapping which will be prioritized specifically to FirstEnergy and the energy sector.

  • Defining metrics and key performance indicators to measure the Threat Identification capability maturity progression and strategy.

  • Performing data studies and reviews for specific SOC use cases.

  • Performing regular additional security related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications Include:

  • Experience working with the enterprise service management ITIL processes (Service, Incidents, Changes, Configuration items) and 3+ years of experience with a strong understanding of Big Data technologies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years IT experience.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of Boolean logic, regular expressions, TCP/IP fundamentals, Unix administration, Microsoft Windows administration.

  • Proficiency in SQL queries, R, and scripting (Perl, Python, Powershell etc.).

  • Knowledge of Risk Management techniques to defeat advanced attackers.

  • Knowledge of data visualization methods preferred.

  • Previous experience with Business Intelligence platforms.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and oversight.

  • Ability to work with highly confidential information.

  • Security data handling as it relates to security information management tools.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
